With Love From Hanalei
Blog 4: Why Surfers Love Hanalei Bay - A Guide to Kauai’s Best Waves
We started this blog to share stories about our family business, life in Hanalei, and of course, surfing. The funny thing is—I don’t actually surf! I’ve learned everything I know from our instructors, my dad, and my brother. So for this month’s post, I turned to one of our longtime instructors, Evan Kaahea. He’s been teaching with us for 12 years, and our guests love his caring, kind, and skilled approach. I’m excited to have him share his wisdom with you—enjoy!
Why Hanalei is the Best Place to Surf in Kauai
- Written by Evan Kaahea
Hanalei is the best place to surf because there is something for everyone — from mellow beginner-friendly sandbar waves to advanced reef breaks. The sandbars that form in Hanalei, allow waves to break far out where you are able to get a long and quality ride.
The waves break slow and are great for beginners, however, for an advanced beginner, we have many different spots for bigger waves. If you are really ambitious, you can even go out to one of the reef breaks. Not only does Hanalei have surfing options for every skill level, but you also get to surf in Hanalei Bay- one of the most scenic beaches!
For Beginners & Advanced Beginners great spots to go out would be the sandbars- the pier is great during bigger swell and Pine Trees, Cape, Grandpa’s, Pavilion are great for smaller waves. These spots are great for building confidence and having a nice sandy bottom. Our map shows where you can find all of these spots!
For Intermediate to Advanced Surfers who want to surf a reef break, Hanalei has plenty of spots for you. The main reef break in Hanalei Bay has 3 different peaks
The Bowl:
Right in the center of the bay — softer wave, long rides, perfect for long boarding or advanced beginners looking to step it up.
Flat Rock:
Next peak over — steeper, faster, high-performance wave. You’ll see more shortboards here and skilled surfers working the face.
The Point:
Way outside, furthest out. Long rides and dreamy conditions when it's on. The ideal ride is catching one from The Point all the way to the Bowl — maybe even sneaking in a barrel or two along the way.
Other Notable Spots in Hanalei:
Middles (left end of the bay):
More exposed to swell, especially good in winter. Mellow reef break — great for advanced beginners on a good day.
Waikoko:
More advanced reef break — shallow, fast, and a tricky paddle-out. Mostly short boarding, not ideal for beginners.

Why He Loves Teaching Surf Lessons in Kauai:
Evan’s favorite part of teaching is “seeing the excitement in people’s eyes when they catch their first wave.” That moment of pure joy is why he believes surfing is more than just a sport—it’s an experience you’ll never forget.
When He’s Not Teaching:
Evan’s perfect day off starts with an early morning surf session, followed by poke, an acai bowl, and a refreshing dip in cold pond. It’s the ultimate Kauai reset.
Local Tip from Evan:
“If it’s your first time visiting, make sure you see the Na Pali Coast—whether by hike, helicopter, or boat ride, it’s a must!”
Inspiration & Kauai Life
Evan’s surf style is inspired by local favorite Josh Kamalani, who charges big barrels with style and grace. What he loves most about living on Kauai? The good surf, fresh food, and great vibes. Or as he describes it, “Heaven on Earth.”
Fun Fact & Story
People are often surprised to learn that Evan is both Hawaiian and Jewish—he calls himself “Jewiian.” And like many surf stories go, he’s had his share of funny wipeouts—once losing his board shorts to the shorebreak and having to run up the beach with his board as cover!
