Kawaihoa “Kawai” Nuhi

Age: 19 | From: Hanalei, Kauai

At just 19, Kawai has already been surfing for 14 years. Growing up in Hanalei, he’s spent most of his life in the ocean, and today he shares that passion by teaching surf lessons. For Kawai, the best part of instructing is simple: being in the water and making someone’s day.

People are often surprised to learn he’s 50% Hawaiian, and his roots shine through in everything he does. On his days off, you’ll find him surfing, golfing, working out, or mountain biking—anything active and outdoors. His biggest tip for visitors to Kauai? Surf as much as you can and take time to explore the whole island.

Inspired by Andy Irons, Kawai describes his vibe as calm, collected, and patient. His spirit animal in the water is the tiger shark, and Rootz Reggae is usually playing in his head while he rides. For him, Kauai is best summed up by the phrase: “Ua mau ke ea o ka ʻāina i ka pono!”—the life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness.

One of his most unforgettable surf stories? Riding waves along the Napali Coast while dolphins swam nearby.
